think obama has papered over that for the last four years. but i think that's going to change here in the next few years. the first issue where i think we'll see a conversation on this is the question of entitlements. there are some folks in the democratic party who are happy to have a conversation on issues like the eligibility age for medicare. other democrats like sherrod brown, the senator from ohio, i talked to, they say hell, no, we are not going to have a conversation about that. that is core to our dna, and we're not going to move on that. >> j-mart, last time republicans had an internal debate about a lot of these issues, a lot of folks divided the party. you mention smd moderaed some m coming over to the democratic party. do you see a contentious primaries in the future for the 2014 midterms? >> well, look. i don't think you're going to see the sort of club-for-growth-style conservative on moderate attacks that you see in the gop. i think you're going to see some of that. keep in mind, the primary story began '06 when joe lieberman in connecticut faced a threat from his l

is out of control. up five points from two years ago. 69% of those surveyed say the debt limit should only be raised after major cuts. aides to the number two senate republicans does not support giving president obama a blank check but told "houston chronicle" editorial board, "we will raise the debt ceiling. we are not going to default on our debt." he went on to say "i tell you unequivocally we are not going to default." cornyn notes there will be tax revenue coming in and said it may be necessary to partially shut down the government to secure the long-term fiscal well-being of the country. white house aides just want congress to get it done. >> the point is without drama and delay, monthly extension is drama. okay? so congress should do its job. we're not going to negotiate over extending the debt ceiling. >> though the house is planning something short-term to force the senate to the a budget. >> just the structure, moving something on a shorter term, what we are discussing is something that all could support. it's reasonable. but also very constructive for america themselves. >>

obama inaugural, they're very much resigned to a pretty difficult time economically. there isn't nearly the sort of hope that you had in 2009 when we asked people is 2013 going to be a year of economic expansion and opportunity or where where you pull back and stay for hard times? by two to one, people say they're going to pull back and save for hard times. president obama's approval rating is over 50%, it's at 52%. not bad. but not a real spike as sometimes you get with a re-elected president who benefits from the absence of bad feeling once the election is over. he's doing a little better, but he only moves in a narrow band. republicans or the congress, rather, is doing much, much worse. you see the approval rating for congress. it's only 14%. 81% disapprove of congress. that is epically bad and it shows the president has a bit of a strength in hand as he goes into the budget talks. so does this final number that i want to run through, which is if the budget talk fails, the debt limit is not raised and if there are consequences for the united states not meeting its obligations, who wo
